One Dead, Six Injured in Early-Morning House Fire in Northwest Washington

WASHINGTON — A man died and six other people, including three children, were taken to hospitals after a fire swept through a house in Northwest Washington early Sunday, according to the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department.

Firefighters were called shortly before 5 a.m. to the 600 block of Geranium Street NW, where flames and smoke had spread through a two-story residence. The fire extended from the front toward the rear of the building, authorities said.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other people — a man, a woman and a child — were hospitalized with critical injuries, according to information provided by fire officials. Another woman and two children were taken to hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Officials had not released the dead man’s name or the ages of the children by Sunday afternoon. The conditions of the six hospitalized people had not been updated in the information available for this report.

The fire drew a substantial emergency response to the neighborhood early in the morning. Crews extinguished the blaze Sunday, but investigators had not determined what started it.
