Police Fatally Shoot Man After Break-In Call on Reservoir Road NW near Georgetown University Hospital.

A Metropolitan Police Department officer fatally shot a man inside a home on Reservoir Road NW on Friday evening after officers responded to a residential burglary alarm, authorities said.

Police said the officers arrived at around 7:00p.m. to the 4400 block of Reservoir Road NW, where they found signs of a break-in. Officers spent nearly 20 minutes issuing commands for him to leave the house before moving to the second floor, where, according to Assistant Chief Andre Wright, the man “lunged at an officer with a knife in one hand and a screwdriver in the other.” Officers opened fire and the man was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Officials said the resident had a civil protection order against the man, and the man had been arrested the previous day for violating the order. Police said Friday’s alarm appeared to indicate another unlawful entry into the residence.

Wright said officers attempted to de-escalate before entering the home but were confronted at close range. No officers were injured.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office review the shooting, a standard step after a fatal use of force. Authorities have not released the man’s name, and body-camera footage has not yet been made public.

The block remained closed for several hours as detectives examined the scene. Officials said additional details will be released as the investigation develops.
