Anti-scale fencing installed at White House and Lafayette Square ahead of high-profile visits

Workers put up tall anti-scale fencing around the White House and Lafayette Square late Tuesday, temporarily blocking pedestrian access to areas that typically remain open.

Authorities have not announced the reason for the installation, but the timing coincides with two upcoming visits by foreign leaders that in the past have drawn demonstrators.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to meet with President Trump on Thursday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected at the White House next Monday. Both leaders’ previous trips to Washington have prompted protests, some of which turned confrontational.

During a 2017 visit, members of Erdogan’s security detail clashed with protesters outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence. Several demonstrators were injured and the incident drew criticism from U.S. officials.

Protests have also accompanied past visits by Israeli leaders, with groups gathering near the White House and along Pennsylvania Avenue to voice views on Middle East policy.

The Secret Service, which oversees security for the White House complex, declined to provide details on the fencing or how long it will remain in place. The National Park Service, which manages Lafayette Square, also did not immediately comment.

Anti-scale fencing has been used in the past during periods of heightened security. In June 2020, similar barriers were erected around the White House perimeter following large demonstrations for George Floyd in Lafayette Square.

The latest barriers extend along the north side of the White House and through parts of Lafayette Square. As of Wednesday morning, tourists and local residents were being redirected around the area while crews finished securing the perimeter, though some access to the park remains open.
