WASHINGTON — A 17-year-old boy died after being shot inside a home in Southeast Washington on Tuesday, prompting a homicide investigation as police searched for information about what led to the killing.
Officers responded at about 11:40 a.m. to the 2700 block of Minnesota Avenue SE and found the teenager, identified as Joshua Carter of Southeast D.C., suffering from a gunshot wound, according to police. D.C. Fire and EMS took him to a hospital, where he died.
Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said the teenager had been shot inside a residence before making his way outside.
This is the second 17-year-old shot this week, with police still investigating the death of Daniyah Ford, a basketball player at Coolidge High School, who was shot in a double shooting in the Petworth neighborhood over the weekend. Ford was one of three people killed in a spate of murders on Saturday.
Mr. Carter’s murder makes 78 murders for the year in the District of Columbia, a decrease of 29% over last year, though overall violent crime is up 10% over 2025.
