WASHINGTON — A 17-year-old girl died Sunday after she and a man were shot the previous evening in Northwest Washington, police said, turning the case into the city’s third homicide investigation in the last 24 hours.
Officers responded shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday to reports of gunfire in the 3700 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW. They found the teenager and an adult man conscious and breathing with gunshot wounds, according to police. Both were taken to hospitals.
Police said Sunday that the girl had died from her injuries. Her name had not been released.
Investigators were searching for two male suspects who may have fled in a black sedan. A motive for the shooting had not been announced.
Earlier in the day, at 4:05 PM, police responded to a gunshot call that turned out to be a stabbing in the Ivy City neighborhood of Northeast. A victim was transported to the hospital and later succumbed to their injuries.
Another homicide investigation is also underway in Northeast following a call for an unconscious person in the 100 block of 45th Street NE. Police discovered a male victim who unconscious and not breathing inside an apartment who was suffering from an assault. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
As of Sunday morning, the DC crime website showed a total of 77 homicides this year, down from 108 at this point last year. Violent crime is up 10% though, given a nearly 40% rise in assault with deadly weapons.
