Police and National Guard clash with Juveniles at Navy Yard

WASHINGTON — A massive disturbance near the Washington Navy Yard late Saturday night drew a heavy police and National Guard response after a large group of juveniles clashed with one another and officers, forcing widespread road closures and a temporary shutdown of part of the Metro station.

Police said the unrest began around 9:45 pm when hundreds of young people gathered near M Street SE, fighting and clashing with police. Officers from the Metropolitan Police Department, aided by National Guard personnel and federal law enforcement, moved in to break up the crowds.

The situation grew tense enough that the New Jersey Avenue entrance to the Navy Yard–Ballpark Metro station was closed while authorities worked to restore order. Roads through the neighborhood remained blocked for several hours as officers dispersed the groups and arrested several participants.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos, with dozens of police cruisers responding and youths running through residential streets. Residents expressed frustration online, saying similar late-night gatherings have become more frequent and disruptive in the area.

Police are asking anyone with photos or video from the incident to contact their tip line as the investigation continues.
