WASHINGTON — A man died after being stabbed Saturday afternoon in Northeast Washington, and D.C. police said a suspect was taken into custody at the scene.
Metropolitan Police Department officers responded at about 4:05 p.m. to the area of Fenwick Street and West Virginia Avenue NE after receiving an initial report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they determined that the man had suffered a stab wound.
The victim was conscious and breathing when officers found him, according to police. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died despite efforts to save his life.
Police said a suspect was arrested at the scene. Authorities had not publicly identified the victim or announced charges against the person in custody as of Sunday morning.
An AlertDC message sent shortly after the incident said police were investigating a stabbing in the 1900 block of West Virginia Avenue NE and that a suspect was in custody.
The Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating. Police have asked anyone with information about the case to contact investigators.
This is the District’s 77th homicide of the year, a decline of 28% decline from last year at this time when there were 108 homicides. Despite this drop, violent crime in the District is up 10% over last year, led by a nearly 40% increase in assaults.
