WASHINGTON – A man armed with a handgun attempted to rob three people at a Northwest Washington skate park, demanding $20 from each before fleeing empty-handed in a waiting vehicle, according to D.C. police.
The incident occurred at the Shaw Skate Park, where video of the encounter has since circulated widely on social media.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the suspect approached three victims while displaying a handgun and demanded that each hand over $20. Police said the victims did not comply, and the suspect fled the area without taking any property.
Investigators said the suspect ran to a gray Lexus sedan that was waiting nearby before leaving the scene.
No injuries were reported.
The Metropolitan Police Department has released images of the suspect and is asking for the public’s help identifying him.
The viral video shows the suspect confronting a small group inside the skate park before quickly leaving. The footage has drawn widespread attention online, with many viewers expressing surprise at both the brazen nature of the attempted robbery and the relatively small amount of money the suspect allegedly demanded.
The incident has renewed concerns about safety in public recreation areas in the District, particularly at parks that attract young people and remain busy into the evening.
Police have not announced any arrests or released additional details about the suspect.
