DC Faces Surge in Violence: 11 Homicides in 10 Days Amid High-Profile Killings

Washington, D.C. — May 25, 2025

Washington, D.C., is grappling with a surge in violence, recording 11 homicides over the past 10 days, including the deaths of two Israeli Embassy staffers and a fatal shooting near an elementary school track meet.

The latest incident occurred on May 23 in Southeast D.C., where two young men were fatally shot, and a third was critically injured. The victims were found on the 4200 block of 4th Street SE, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite efforts by D.C. Fire and EMS, two were pronounced dead at the scene, and the third remains in critical condition.

This incident follows a May 20 shooting near an elementary school track meet in Northeast D.C., where a man was fatally shot on a sidewalk close to the event. No students were injured, but the incident prompted officials to halt the competition and ensure the safety of attendees.

On May 21, two Israeli Embassy staff members, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, were shot and killed outside the Capital Jewish Museum after attending a diplomatic reception. The suspect, Elias Rodriguez, was apprehended at the scene and has been charged with multiple offenses, including first-degree murder and murder of foreign officials.

These incidents contribute to a concerning trend in the nation’s capital, with 11 homicides reported in just 10 days. As of early May, there have been 61 homicides in D.C. this year, compared to 66 at the same point last year.

The Metropolitan Police Department urges anyone with information related to these incidents to come forward. Tips can be submitted by calling (202) 727-9099 or anonymously texting 50411. A reward of up to $25,000 is offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in each homicide case.
