WASHINGTON — A two-month-old girl died after being found suffering from blunt-force injuries inside a Southeast Washington apartment Sunday night, prompting a homicide investigation that police say has domestic overtones.
The infant, identified by police as Khamyah Honesty of Southeast D.C., was found unresponsive in an apartment in the 800 block of New Jersey Avenue SE shortly before 10 p.m. on Aug. 16. First District officers responding to a report of an unconscious infant found the girl with apparent blunt-force injuries, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
D.C. Fire and EMS crews transported Khamyah to a hospital, where she later died.
The District’s chief medical examiner determined Tuesday that the girl died from blunt-force trauma and ruled the manner of death a homicide, transforming what initially was reported as a medical emergency into a criminal investigation.
Police have released few details about what happened inside the apartment or who may have been responsible. Investigators said they quickly identified what they described as “domestic overtones,” but have not publicly identified a suspect or announced any arrests.
The investigation is being led by detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Victims Unit and Homicide Branch, in coordination with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Anyone with information that could assist investigators is urged to contact the Metropolitan Police Department.
