A joint fugitive task force—including members of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), U.S. Marshals, ATF, Diplomatic Security Service, Metro Transit Police, and other agencies—was involved in a fatal officer-involved shooting early this morning in Northwest Washington.
According to law enforcement sources, the incident occurred at approximately 6:55 a.m. in the 1400 block of Girard Street NW. The person shot by officers was a suspect wanted in connection with the homicide of a woman whose body was discovered on Minnesota Avenue earlier this week.
The fugitive task force had been actively searching for the suspect in connection with the October 5 homicide of 33-year-old Maurisha Singletary, whose body was found following a welfare check at a residence in the 4000 block of Minnesota Avenue NE. Investigators say the suspect was believed responsible for that killing and had been the subject of a coordinated interagency manhunt.
This morning’s operation brought officers to the 1400 block of Girard Street NW, where the suspect was located. During the encounter, officers say the suspect produced a weapon, prompting them to fire. The suspect was struck and later pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity, citing the ongoing investigation.
No officers were reported injured in the shooting. Following standard procedure, the MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau will investigate the shooting as the primary agency responsible for all police-involved shootings in the District of Columbia.
