A severe single-vehicle collision on Interstate 695 westbound near Exit 2 (M Street SE) today resulted in a rollover and prompted a major emergency response, DC Fire and EMS confirmed.
At approximately 10:19 a.m., the Department reported that an adult male was ejected from his vehicle during the accident, suffering serious injuries. The victim was immediately transported to a hospital by the US Park Police EAGLE helicopter, although his condition has not been released.
DC Fire and EMS dispatched multiple units, including engines and ambulances. The department shared a stark photo of the badly damaged and rolled vehicle on X, highlighting both the severity of the crash and the swift nature of the rescue effort.
The closure of I‑695 westbound disrupted regional traffic, especially during the midmorning commute. Nearby Southeast Washington neighborhoods experienced delays as the thoroughfare remained blocked while crews cleared the wreckage. Officials reported that the lanes were eventually reopened after rescue and clean-up operations concluded within the hour.
