WASHINGTON–A shooting early Sunday morning left three men injured in the heart of one of the city’s most active nightlife corridors, raising fresh concerns about public safety in the Dupont Circle area.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded just after 3 a.m. to reports of gunfire in the 1800 block of Jefferson Place NW. The shooting occurred near the 1200 block of Connecticut Avenue NW, a stretch known for its late-night bars and clubs just south of Dupont Circle.
When officers arrived, they found three men suffering from gunshot wounds. All were transported to local hospitals and were reported to be conscious and breathing, police said.
The incident is the latest in a string of violent episodes that have rattled the Dupont neighborhood, which has long maintained a reputation for relative calm during weekend nights. In recent months, however, tensions have mounted around the area’s nightclubs, which draw large, diverse crowds and have seen an uptick in post-closing-time altercations.
In one particularly alarming episode on April 5, 2024, five people were shot after a man who had been ejected from a club returned with a firearm and opened fire on a crowd outside.
As the investigation into Sunday’s shooting continues, authorities are asking the public for assistance.
