A D.C. police officer died early Monday after suffering a gunshot wound inside a police station in Northwest Washington, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
D.C. Fire and EMS was dispatched about 5:02 a.m. to the Second District police headquarters at 3320 Idaho Ave. NW for what was initially reported as a cardiac arrest, according to emergency dispatch information. After arriving, responders requested additional personnel, including EMS supervisors.
The officer apparently suffered the gunshot wound in a locker room inside the station, according to preliminary information about the incident.
The officer was transported to a hospital in critical condition and later died, police said. The officer’s name had not been released as of early Monday afternoon.
“Nothing currently indicates that another party was involved,” an MPD spokesperson said in a statement. The department’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the shooting.
It remained unclear Monday whether the officer intentionally fired the weapon or whether it discharged accidentally. Police have not publicly described the circumstances immediately preceding the shooting or identified the firearm involved.
