Washington, D.C. — Ben’s Chili Bowl, the legendary U Street eatery that has served Washingtonians and visitors since 1958, will close its original location for necessary repairs and upgrades from July 14 through November.
According to the restaurant’s official announcement, the closure will begin at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, and will allow for major work to “electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing, and more.” The renovations aim to prepare the building “for the next generation of Ben’s Chili Bowl,” while preserving the look and feel that generations have come to love.
Despite the physical closure of the original site at 1213 U Street NW, the Ali family, who founded and continue to run the restaurant, emphasized that “this is NOT goodbye!”
To ensure continuity, Ben’s will operate a pop-up location directly across the street at Amsterdam Lounge (1208 U Street NW) beginning Wednesday, July 17. The pop-up will offer the same famous menu, including the beloved half-smokes, chili dogs, and burgers.
“We are truly grateful for the unwavering support of our amazing community and dedicated team,” the family said in the statement. “We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make our original location even better for the future.”
Regular updates will be posted on the restaurant’s website and social media channels as the renovations progress.
