Car drives off Rock Creek and into the Potomac River Near Roosevelt Bridge

WASHINGTON – July 17, 2025. A vehicle drove into the Potomac River near the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge late Wednesday night, July 16.

Emergency crews from the U.S. Park Police and D.C. Fire and EMS responded just before midnight after the car was discovered fully submerged in the water. The sole occupant, an adult male, was reported to be safe.

Park Police quickly secured the area, and D.C. Fire Department divers were dispatched to examine the vehicle and confirm that no additional passengers were inside, according to video and eyewitness reports from journalist Anthony Peltier.

Recovery operations began early Thursday morning, and the vehicle was successfully removed from the river on July 17. The identity of the driver has not yet been released.

The U.S. Park Police is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
