Chaos Grips D.C. as Police Respond to Wave of Violence During City Events

Washington, D.C. — A series of violent incidents swept through the District Saturday night into early Sunday morning, stretching police resources thin as officers responded to multiple shootings and stabbings amid large public gatherings across the city.

Two people were killed during the violence, bringing the city’s homicide total to 73 for the year.

As crowds gathered in Dupont Circle for the World Pride Day march, violence broke out with a double stabbing that left two men injured. The situation escalated when gunshots were fired near the Dupont Circle Metro station, prompting attendees to flee and police to order the area cleared.

Later in the night, the U Street Corridor saw tensions rise. Police blocked vehicle traffic between 10th and 14th Streets NW to manage a large group of mostly juveniles. A juvenile was shot in the 1900 block of 13th Street NW, and one person was taken into custody in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, in Southeast D.C., an urgent officer distress call—known as a 10-33—was broadcast in the 7th District after police came under fire from unknown assailants. The MPD’s FALCON helicopter responded, but the suspect managed to evade capture.

Elsewhere in the city:

  • In the 1400 block of S Street NW, a man was fatally shot just after midnight. Police are investigating the incident as a homicide.
  • A domestic dispute turned deadly in the 4100 block of 7th Street NW, where a woman was arrested after allegedly fatally stabbing another individual.
  • A woman was stabbed aboard a Metrobus in the 2400 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE.
  • A self-inflicted gunshot wound was recorded on the unit block of M Street NE.
  • In another incident at 3400 A Street SE, a shooting victim arrived at Engine 27 fire station with a firearm and was subsequently arrested.

The spate of violence comes as the city juggles high-profile events and the ongoing challenge of managing large youth gatherings during the summer months. Police have not released the identities of the victims or suspects in the various cases. Investigations are ongoing.
