A fire that broke out early Tuesday afternoon in the garage of a Northwest D.C. home quickly spread through the structure, displacing four residents and a family dog, according to D.C. Fire and EMS.
The two-alarm blaze erupted in the 3800 block of Albemarle Street NW, a quiet residential neighborhood near Tenleytown. Fire officials said the flames rapidly consumed multiple floors of the two-story house, prompting a large-scale response that brought approximately 100 firefighters and more than 20 fire and EMS units to the scene.
“The fire was located in the garage area and had extended into the structure upon arrival,” D.C. Fire and EMS said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “A 2nd Alarm was requested due to the volume of fire.”
Photos released by the department showed thick smoke pouring from the home and crews battling heavy flames from the roof and upper floors. It took more than 40 minutes to bring the fire under control, officials said.
Two adults, two children, and a dog escaped the blaze safely, but the family has been displaced. The American Red Cross was called in to provide temporary assistance.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Crews remained on-site late into the afternoon to perform overhaul operations, ensuring the fire was fully extinguished and checking for potential flare-ups.
The block was temporarily closed to traffic as firefighters worked the scene, drawing a small crowd of neighbors who watched in concern as thick smoke lingered above the treetops.
