A disagreement over an electric vehicle charging cable escalated into gunfire Tuesday afternoon in Northeast Washington, leaving one man injured and prompting a multi-hour standoff that ended with the suspect’s arrest, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
The incident unfolded around 3:02 p.m. on June 3 in the 2600 block of 10th Street NE. Police said the suspect and the victim became embroiled in an argument over access to an EV charging cable. During the dispute, the suspect allegedly shot the victim, who was later transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators from MPD’s Real Time Crime Center tracked the suspect’s vehicle to a residence in the 1000 block of Bryant Place NE. Officers established a perimeter and declared a barricade situation. After several hours, members of MPD’s Emergency Response Team negotiated the suspect’s peaceful surrender.
The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Ato Ocran of Northeast D.C. He has been charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun), Destruction of Property, and Possession of an Unregistered Firearm.
