Authorities have identified the man who died Monday on the Billy Goat Trail in Great Falls as Todd Funkhouser, a beloved elementary school teacher from Inwood, West Virginia.
Funkhouser, who taught physical education at Horizon Elementary School in Loudoun County, Virginia, was hiking along Section A of the Billy Goat Trail when he suffered what officials believe was a medical emergency and fell. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue crews responded just after noon to reports of an injured hiker in a remote area of the trail, known for its steep rocks and limited access.
Rescue teams used both land and swift-water units to reach Funkhouser, ultimately carrying him by boat to the Old Angler’s Inn boat ramp. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the days following the incident, colleagues, students, and family members have remembered Funkhouser for his warmth, humor, and dedication to his students. His sister, Lauren Funkhouser, wrote that he “loved being a teacher” and “lived for his kids.” Parents and coworkers described him as a constant source of encouragement who brought energy and kindness to his classroom and community.
Officials from the U.S. Park Police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue are continuing to investigate the circumstances of his death. Preliminary reports suggest he may have experienced a medical emergency just before his fall.
The Billy Goat Trail, particularly Section A, is one of the most challenging and popular hikes in the region, attracting thousands each year. Its rocky terrain and proximity to the Potomac River have led to frequent rescues and several fatalities over the years.
Funeral and memorial arrangements for Funkhouser have not yet been announced.
