Man arrested and Suspicious Package Near Treasury Building Prompts Bomb Squad Response and Road Closures

Washington DC Metropolitan Police Bomb Squad and the US Secret Service investigate a suspicious package found near the White House on July 27, 2025. After a closer inspection by a bomb technician, the area was declared clear and roads reopened.

Washington, D.C. — A man was arrested at the Treasury building on Sunday after he tried to scale the fence surrounding the White House / Treasury complex.

The man, sent to hospital for a medical evaluation, reportedly had outstanding warrants and was taken into custody by the US Secret Service.

As he climbed the fence, he left behind a bag on the sidewalk that triggered a suspicious package alarm with the D.C. Police and Fire Department. The Metropolitan Police Department’s bomb squad and the D.C. Fire and EMS Department’s hazardous materials team responded at 3:03pm.

Officers from both the Secret Service and MPD quickly cordoned off the area, halting pedestrian and vehicular traffic while K-9 units and bomb technicians assessed the scene.

A bomb squad technician in full protective gear inspected the item, ultimately deeming it non-threatening. Authorities did not immediately disclose the package’s contents.

By late afternoon, streets were reopened and normal traffic had resumed. Officials have not indicated whether the package was left intentionally or posed any broader security threat.
