Thirteen people, including two teenagers and a child, were shot across Washington, D.C., on Friday night in a string of unrelated incidents that stretched from Benning Road in the Northeast to Savannah Terrace in the Southeast, according to D.C. police.
The largest shooting occurred shortly before 11 p.m. near Howard University, where five people were shot in the 2300 block of Georgia Avenue NW during homecoming weekend, police said. Officers responding to the scene found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds near the Howard University Bookstore. All were conscious when taken to local hospitals. Two suspects were detained and three weapons recovered, according to police.
Earlier in the evening, two people were shot in the 1700 block of Benning Road NE, and another person was wounded in the 3100 block of 16th Street NW, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. A separate shooting at the 1900 block of Savannah Terrace SE left a child injured. Police later reported the five-year-old was only grazed by the bullet.
Around the same time, police said a shooting on Yuma Street SE left two teenagers hurt, and another teen was shot on 50th Street SE. A man was also reported shot on Hiatt Place NW after midnight to cap off a violent evening in the District of Columbia.
3200 Hiatt Place NW – 1shot
1700 Benning Road – 2 shot
3100 16th Street NW – 1 shot
2300 Georgia Avenue NW – 5 shot
1900 Savannah Terrace SE – 1 child
200 50th Street SE – 1 teens shot
800 Yuma Street SE – 2 teens shot
The wave of gunfire came amid President Trump’s federal crackdown on violent crime in the District, which includes the recent deployment of National Guard troops to assist local authorities. However, Guard patrols have primarily been concentrated around downtown, the Mall, and other high-traffic tourist areas — not in the neighborhoods where most of Friday’s shootings occurred.
