Starting today, Metro customers can pay their fares by tapping a contactless credit or debit card, or a mobile wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay, at any Metrorail faregate in the system. The launch of the “Tap. Ride. Go.” initiative marks a major step forward in fare payment modernization for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).
The new option is designed to improve the rider experience—particularly for tourists and occasional customers—by eliminating the need to purchase and reload a SmarTrip® card. Contactless bank cards and mobile wallets offer a quick, easy alternative for paying fares and accessing the Metro system.
“This is a win for customers and a milestone in modernizing Metro,” said WMATA General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke. “Contactless payment is a world-class standard, and we are pleased to remove a friction point for those who may not be familiar with America’s Metro system.”
The contactless rollout begins with rail, with plans to expand to Metrobus and parking facilities in the near future. Riders are reminded to tap in and out with the same card or device to ensure proper fare calculation. Each rider must use their own payment method—multiple riders cannot share a single contactless card or mobile wallet.
SmarTrip cards will still be accepted throughout the system and remain necessary for discounted fares, unlimited passes, and Metro’s bus and parking services.
